Tennessee Onions Recipe

Tennessee Onions Recipe

  • Author: Diana Carrozza

Description

Tennessee Onions are the ultimate Southern comfort side dish—simple, savory, and irresistibly cheesy. Sweet onion slices are layered in a baking dish, smothered in melted butter, topped with sharp cheddar cheese, and finished with crispy breadcrumbs. As they bake, the onions become tender and flavorful, while the cheese and buttery topping create a golden, bubbly crust. It’s a crowd-pleasing dish that’s perfect alongside grilled meats, burgers, or your favorite Southern staples.

Ingredients

• 2 large sweet onions, sliced into rings
• 2 tablespoons butter, melted
• 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
• 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
• Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C)
2. Arrange the onion rings in a greased baking dish
3. Drizzle melted butter over the onions
4. Sprinkle grated cheddar cheese evenly on top
5. Top with breadcrumbs and season with salt and pepper
6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and the breadcrumbs are golden brown
7. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use Sweet Onions: Vidalia or another sweet variety works best for that mellow, caramelized flavor.

  • Add Extra Cheese: Feel free to mix in mozzarella or Monterey Jack for extra melty goodness.

  • Breadcrumb Options: Panko gives a crispier texture, while traditional breadcrumbs keep it classic.

  • Make It Spicy: Add a dash of cayenne or red pepper flakes for a little kick.

  • Perfect for BBQs & Potlucks: Easy to prepare ahead and bake when ready—this dish travels well!

  • Leftovers: Store in an airtight container and reheat in the oven or air fryer for best texture.
