Ingredients
Main Ingredients:
- 1 cup lump crab meat (fresh or canned, drained)
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ½ cup sour cream
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- ¼ cup mozzarella cheese (for topping)
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tsp Old Bay seasoning (or more to taste)
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp smoked paprika
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ¼ tsp cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
- ¼ cup chopped green onions (plus extra for garnish)
- ¼ cup finely chopped red bell pepper
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
For Serving:
- Crackers, toasted baguette slices, pita chips, or tortilla chips
- Extra parsley or green onions for garnish
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a small baking dish or oven-safe skillet with butter or cooking spray.
Step 2: Mix the Creamy Base
In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, and sour cream. Stir well until smooth and creamy.
Step 3: Add Seasonings and Flavor Enhancers
To the bowl, add Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, Old Bay seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using). Stir everything together until well blended.
Step 4: Fold in the Crab Meat and Vegetables
Gently fold in the lump crab meat, chopped green onions, red bell pepper, and minced garlic. Be careful not to break up the crab meat too much—you want chunks for the best texture.
Step 5: Incorporate the Cheeses
Add the shredded cheddar cheese and grated Parmesan cheese to the mixture. Stir everything together until fully combined.
Step 6: Transfer to Baking Dish
Pour the crab dip mixture into the prepared baking dish. Spread it evenly with a spatula, making sure it fills the dish without overflowing.
Step 7: Top with Mozzarella and Bake
Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese evenly on top. Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes or until the dip is bubbly and golden brown on top.
Step 8: Garnish and Serve
Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 5 minutes. Garnish with chopped parsley and extra green onions before serving. Serve warm with crackers, toasted bread, or chips.
Notes
- Choosing the Right Crab Meat:
- Fresh lump crab meat is best for texture and flavor.
- Canned crab works well if fresh isn’t available, but drain it thoroughly.
- Imitation crab can be used in a pinch, but it lacks the richness of real crab.
- Cheese Selection Tips:
- Cheddar cheese adds a sharp and bold taste.
- Parmesan cheese brings in a salty, nutty depth.
- Mozzarella provides a creamy, melty texture on top.
- Feel free to experiment with Gruyère, Monterey Jack, or smoked gouda for variations.
- Seasoning Adjustments:
- Old Bay seasoning is key for authentic seafood flavor.
- For extra heat, add more cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes.
- Fresh garlic and onion can be used instead of powdered versions for a stronger flavor.
- Best Serving Temperature:
- This dip is best served warm straight from the oven.
- If making ahead, reheat at 350°F for 10-15 minutes before serving.
- Can also be enjoyed cold if you prefer a chilled dip.
- Alternative Cooking Methods:
- Slow Cooker Method: Cook on low for 2-3 hours until creamy and hot.
- Stovetop Method: Heat in a saucepan over low-medium heat, stirring occasionally.
- Storage & Leftovers:
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat in the oven or microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each.
- Can be used as a sandwich spread or topping for baked potatoes.
- Best Pairings:
- Serve with crusty bread, crackers, pretzel chips, or tortilla chips.
- Pairs well with a light salad, seafood platter, or a fresh fruit side.
- A cold glass of iced tea, lemon water, or sparkling cider complements the flavors.
- Party Tip:
- Double the recipe if making for a large gathering—this dip disappears fast!
- Serve in a hollowed-out bread bowl for a fun and edible presentation.
